My best friend, Leslie, sent me a few articles today talking about how Playboy apparently released their annual top party schools list, except this year they are making consent the priority and released a list of "Top Ten Part Commandments: the Ultimate Guide for a Consensual Good Time." News of this spread like wild fire, and everyone is questioning, mostly commending, Playboy for their willingness to make talking about consent a priority. A few friends of mine at my residential college have bravely taken up the cause of bringing feminism to the forefront of our lives. Today is the debut of Who Needs Feminism at Rice, and I'd like to say a few words in honor of this noble beginning. For your information, Who Needs Feminism is a PR campaign that 16 students from Duke University started to dispel negative associations and misconceptions surrounding feminism, including the belief that society no longer needs feminism. Who Needs Feminism works primarily through asking everyone to share what they think of feminism and taking photos of people who finish the sentence on a white board "I need feminism because..." These photos are then shared via social media to inspire conversations about feminism and its misconceptions. I've been meaning to write a blog post for a while since coming back to school for my junior year, but alas I've been busy with coursework and extracurricular activities. Forgive me blogosphere for leaving you hanging! I'm really happy to continue studying Chinese this semester, which has significantly stepped up its difficulty. I woke up late this morning, did not finish my assignment or study for the quiz. Thankfully both were postponed upon request. I'm also continuing my studies in sociology and women, gender, and sexuality studies. What I really enjoy is that this semester my courses feature more multimedia - videos, clips, news articles, films, songs, etc. They make the conversation so much more relevant and interactive. I sometimes live tweet my classes because so many interesting things are happening one after another. There are certainly overlaps and connections between my courses. I always promise to write a post about something and then I don't update and a week or so later, end up writing an entirely different post, fired up at something else instead. So here goes. I check social media platforms every morning when I wake up. I suspect some of you do the same. Pun intended. First, I have to confess that while doing my translation work I went on iwastesomuchtime.com to procrastinate and add humor to my life, and it has proved worthy. Here's why. One recent post is that of an unknown pair of human legs supposedly wearing a pair of "anti-pervert" hairy leggings. Here it is, be warned (even though there should be no cause for alarm, but I know some of you will find hair disgusting, so whatever) Various sources of sensational journalism has titled it the latest trend in China. This annoys me because it's not a trend, because if it was, the ever so fashionable people of Shanghai would be all up in it, and they're not. The real story is that one Chinese microblogger (on the Chinese version of Twitter) posted this picture and captioned it, "Super sexy, summertime anti-pervert full-leg-of-hair stockings, essential for all young girls going out." I tried with the blog post title, I really did. Amy Poehler has no T's. Oh well So I didn't watch the Golden Globes and apparently Tina Fey and my favorite Amy Poehler poked a little fun at people, doing what they do best, and Taylor Swift was not too happy about it. I read this article from the Guardian and I thought it was very interesting. I'll be honest I can totally jam out to Taylor's songs, I've been to one of her concerts, and I might even want to go to another one since her new album came out. Do I think she's my role model? Hell no, I'm 20 years old, why would I take on after her anyway? As for younger women, I don't know. This went viral on Reddit, of course. And controversies spark. South Korea's plastic surgery rates are infamous, and people jump at the chance that all the contestants may look so similar from plastic surgery, outrage outrage outrage. I go on Tumblr and people are raging, too. Except most of them don't read into stories, and immediately reblog this image, saying how crazy it is, how disappointed they are, judging Korean girls and their plastic surgery left and right. No names but a cursory scroll through the #Miss Korea hashtag and a Tumblr user claimed she/he (probably a she?) has very low self esteem but still considers her/him-self to be more attractive than these contestants. Another user thinks that these contestants look quite beautiful without make up on. So I minor in this thing called Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities. We study gender, poverty, and development, essentially. It's disheartening most of the times, because there truly are a lot of problems out there. Since our first priority is academics, one way that we can  help is to share our academic knowledge. We do this through working with Wikipedia to revise and add articles on topics related to our courses. Last semester, I worked on revising the Wikipedia article on obstetric fistulas.
